First Avenue
What can I say about First Avenue that you probably have not heard? It is the longest running independently owned and operated music venue in the United States. You can go listen to an upcoming artist that you may never have heard about or a national act. This is a rocking place. You can listen to all different genres of music. The building that houses First Avenue has a unique history of its own. It began as the Greyhound bus depot. It was one of the most modernistic and beautiful travel centers in America.
In 1968 Allan Fingerhut (an heir to the Fingerhut catalog) bought the location. It first housed a cigar, barbershop, and café. Fingerhut was a visionary and saw the potential for a music venue. They started the business of combining alcohol and music. First Avenue was originally the Depot. Joe Cocker was the first musician to play at The Depot. During the 70’s some of the most influential bands in music played at The Depot.
The 80’s came in with a new name First Avenue. The owners of First Avenue also own the Turf Club, which is one of the best music venues in the Twin Cities.
Head on down and take a selfie or two with your favorite musician/band's star. If nothing else, look at the music history of stars on the outside of the building.
If you happen to make it down to First Avenue for a show, get there early and grab some grubbin food from The Depot.
