Kindred Spirits: Choctaw Native American Monument

Kindred Spirits: Choctaw Native American Monument

When I visited Cork, I took a drive down to Middleton to specifically view the monument.  I had seen pictures of the monument online.  It was beautiful, each feather was a different color.  The monument was relatively easy to find, even in the dark.  Upon arrival all the feathers were a blue color.  Walked up closer and took a few pictures and the feather colors never changed.  The monument was still beautiful, but I was disappointed.  When you are expecting the feathers to be lit up in all colors of the rainbow and they were not, it was disappointing.  I really wish I would of went during the daytime to view each feather up close.

The history of the monument is interesting.  Kindred Spirits commemorates the 1847 donation by the Choctaw People to the Irish famine relief during the Great Hunger.  The Choctaw themselves were living in hardship and poverty and having recently endured the Trail of Tears.

The sculpture has 9, 20-foot stainless eagle feathers arranged in a circle.  No 2 feathers are identical, forming a bowl shape to represent the gift of a bowl of food.
